You have received a consultation letter

Understand the questions, evidence and response deadline.

01

Read the letter and record the deadline

A consultation letter gives you an opportunity to comment on information before the authority makes a decision. Identify exactly what needs clarification and when the response must arrive.

02

Check the information

Compare the letter with documents already submitted. Identify misunderstandings, factual errors and missing information. Consider whether access to the case file is needed to understand the basis of the case.

03

Support your response

Answer the specific questions and attach relevant evidence. Distinguish clearly between facts, supporting documents and legal submissions.

04

Act in good time

If you need more time, you can ask the authority for an extension and explain why. Do not assume the deadline has changed until the authority confirms it.
